　　Some people think that the earlier technology has changed our life more than the recent technology. Do you agree or disagree?

　　Technology, old or new, has indeed made our life different. We no longer amaze at telephones, computers, Internet, or cars, all of which are now just indispensable to our life. But technologies vary in nature and application, and we should not weight their importance merely in terms of the time of their development.

　　First of all, earlier technology and later technology, in many circumstances, are complimentary to each other, and serve different people for various purposes. For example, telephone made its first appearance approximately two centuries ago. Since then, people’s distance and space has been shortened by this amazing invention. Modern technology has made numerous breakthroughs in the field of telecommunication, particularly with the emergence of computer and information technology. A number of the new technologies, in some ways, have taken some of the turf of telephone. The younger generation spends a major part of time talking and communicating via Internet-based technology such as OICQ. Overlapping as the old and new technology in communication, each wouldn’t be complete without the other. As a result, it would not make much sense to judge the significance of technologies only by time.

　　Second, it would not be fair and reasonable to compare technologies in different fields. Say, does it make any sense to compare engine with computer chip? The former is used in trains, airplanes, and cars, while the later drives computer to perform thousands of tasks. Just pretty much like we could not compare an apple with an orange, we could not logically make comparison between technologies in different fields.

　　However, many of the modern technologies do attribute their development to earlier ones. Without the development of power plant, we probably still use candles for light instead of lamp or bulb, not to mention other electricity-powered home appliances.

　　In conclusion, old technology and new technology are both important to our life. Even some new technologies are based on older ones, they are developed and used in different areas. It is hard or even unreasonable to compare their significance by the time of their appearance.
