托福阅读句子简化题答题技巧

在托福阅读中有这样一种题,你明明知道每篇文章都会出现它,雷打不动,题目选项也基本如出一辙,却总是拿它没有办法——这就是托福阅读中的句子简化题。
顾名思义,句子简化题就是选择将原句子变得简单的选项,可是问题是——有些时候四个选项甚至比文章中的句子还要长,所以句子简化题的名字其实有点和题目实质不符,有时并非一切从简就好。而解决这类题目主要请各位选手重视句子结构和成分。
要抓住一个句子的核心意思,首要是结构,即主谓,主谓宾,主系表,主谓宾宾,主谓宾补,句子的五大结构。再就是文章句子的主要逻辑关系——这也是我们不断强调的做题技巧。
今天,环球托福的老师为大家带来在应对托福阅读句子简化题时应该如何处理,比如以下题目:
He refused to develop projection technology, reasoning that if he made and sold projectors, then exhibitors would purchase only one machine-a projector-from him instead of several.
○Edison was more interested in developing a variety of machines than in developing a technology based on only one.
○Edison refused to work on projection technology because he did not think exhibitors would replace their projectors with newer machines.
○Edison did not want to develop projection technology because it limited the number of machines he could sell.
○Edison would not develop projection technology unless exhibitors agreed to purchase more than one projector from him.
这是OG第81页的一道典型的句子简化题。从题目看来,reasoning这个词非常清晰地告诉了我们这道题目存在着因果关系,纵观选项,2和3有一个信号词because,而1和4都横空出现了莫名其妙的逻辑关系,可以直接排出。在仔细比较2,3选项。选手们不难发现,2选项中he did not think exhibitors would replace their projectors with newer machines是个虚假原因,因为文中并未提到Edison不认为什么内容,所以本题正确答案选3,limit机器销售的数量。
因此,上文可见,逻辑关系在托福阅读考试中常常是我们迅速做题的关键信号。当然,环球托福的老师同样提醒大家不能所有题目都只是依赖逻辑去粗暴判断,还是要结合句意的——这样才可以科学得把题目做对。
